Epstein trial 2018 – A civil trial involving politically connected financier and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein ended before it even began on Tuesday with the two sides announcing a last-minute settlement.
The AP reports that a last-minute settlement was reached in Florida in what has been a long-running lawsuit involving a politically-connected financier accused of sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls.
The deal came on Tuesday just before jury selection was set to begin, this means for now none of the victims of Jeffrey Epstein will be able to testify.
A lawyer for Jeffrey Epstein read an apology from him to attorney Bradley Edwards, who represents some victims. Edwards said Epstein tried to damage his reputation by suing him.
Epstein claimed the victim’s lawsuits were part of Ponzi scheme run by a the former law partner.
“I sincerely apologize for the allegations that I made against Mr. Edwards” the statement read.
65-year-old Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty back in 2008 to state sex charges, served a year in jail and became a registered sex offender.
However, in a secret deal with federal prosecutors led by now-Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, Epstein avoided a possible life term, and victims weren’t heard from in court.
At least one of Epstein’s accusers was expected to testify before the surprise announcement of a settlement.
It’s worth noting that the lawyer for Epstein victims said more victims are coming forward…this is not over.
