In Ronan Farrow’s upcoming book, “Catch and Kill,” he details how Harvey Weinstein tried to use his connections to Hillary Clinton to get the reporter’s exposé on him killed in 2017.
Clinton did her best too says Farrow.
Before Farrow published his story in The New Yorker, which detailed a pattern of Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulting actresses, Farrow said he received an email from Clinton’s publicist, Nick Merrill saying the “big story” Farrow was working on was a “concern for us.”
He also says that the campaign withheld access to Clinton at a time when Farrow was trying to interview her for the foreign policy book he was working on at the time.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Farrow said that among those Weinstein turned to were Hillary Clinton, the editors of American Media and even his estranged father Woody Allen.
‘Jeez, I’m so sorry. Good luck,’ Allen told Weinstein, explaining that there was nothing he could do to stop the story.
Weinstein, a major Democratic Party donor, gave Clinton more than $26,000 in contributions since her initial Senate run in 2000, according to the Federal Election Commission.
It wasn’t until five days after The New York Times investigation on Weinstein’s sexual misconduct was published in October 2017 that Hillary Clinton issued a statement decrying his behavior.
“I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein,” the statement read.“The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior.”
She later said on CNN that she would donate the campaign contributions she received from Weinstein to charity.
The stories launched the #MeToo movement, and Harvey Weinstein was fired from the production company he founded and shunned from Hollywood.
The Times reports that Lena Dunham told multiple members of Clinton’s staff about Weinstein’s behavior well before the publication of both exposes.
‘I just want you to let you know that Harvey’s a rapist and this is going to come out at some point,’ said Dunham.
‘I think it’s a really bad idea for him to host fund-raisers and be involved because it’s an open secret in Hollywood that he has a problem with sexual assault.’
Dunham was assured her concerns would be relayed to campaign manager Robby Mook, but later shared her story again with a spokesperson when the campaign continued to have Weinstein spearhead events and fundraisers for Clinton.
Farrow’s book, “Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators,” will be available on October 15.
