New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s daughter was among a few hundred people arrested during riots over the weekend.
Chiara de Blasio, 25, was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Saturday night, the New York City Police Department confirmed. She was arrested for unlawful assembly, police said. She was then issued a desk appearance ticket and released.
The gathering was in Lower Manhattan, according to the New York Post, which first reported that Chiara was blocking traffic and refused to move.
According to WCMH, at least 345 people were arrested in New York City on Saturday during protests throughout the city. The Mayor — who also shares son Dante with wife Chirlane McCray — addressed his daughter’s arrest, during a press conference today saying he first found out about his daughter’s arrest after the media reported on it. The Mayor went on to say he supports his daughter’s decisions and has no control over what she does.
He added that he was disappointed that the information about his daughter’s arrest was leaked to the media.
