CNN is facing widespread pushback after its presidential town hall in New Hampshire at St. Anselm College in Goffstown. The Trump Town Hall event, moderated by CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins, has drawn criticism for featuring the former President.
During the town hall, Trump was given questions from Republican and undeclared voters who plan to participate in the 2024 GOP primary election. New Hampshire is among the four early voting states for the Republican National Committee.
According to CNN, this marked Trump’s first appearance on the network since his 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has maintained a strong position in early hypothetical GOP matchups for the 2024 election. However, CNN featuring the former president has triggered a wave of negative responses on social media, with hashtags like “#BoycottCNN” gaining traction on Twitter.
Democratic fundraiser Scott Dworkin took to Twitter, expressing disappointment in CNN saying that watching the town hall is unnecessary, stating that Trump, whom he referred to as the “biggest pathological liar in politics,” should not be given a platform to propagate falsehoods. Dworkin further asserted that Trump belongs in prison rather than on television.
Former DNC delegate Victor Shi also criticized CNN on Twitter, condemning the network’s town hall for affording Trump a national platform to disseminate lies. Shi contended that CNN’s failure to learn from past mistakes contributes to the media’s failure in serving democracy.
Far-left political commentator Keith Olbermann described CNN’s decision as “committing journalistic suicide,” arguing that it was “irresponsible” to give Trump a national audience.
