Mark Zuckerberg has declared that Elon Musk “isn’t serious” about their proposed cage fight and said that it’s time to move on from the spectacle that captured the tech world’s attention. The details of this much-anticipated showdown had remained uncertain, leaving fans intrigued but ultimately disappointed.
“Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead,” Zuckerberg shared on the social platform Threads in a post on Sunday. The Meta chief executive voiced his frustration, signaling that he’s ready to shift his focus away from the unrealized fight. “If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”
Zuckerberg, 39, had initially proposed August 26 as the date for the fight, but he revealed that Musk, 52, had failed to confirm the date, casting doubt on the feasibility of the event.
Last week, Elon Musk took to X, previously known as Twitter, which he owns, to announce his intentions for the potential clash. Musk revealed that the fight would be streamed on his platform, and he even went so far as to claim that he was “lifting weights throughout the day, preparing for the fight.” He added a charitable twist to the ordeal, stating that “all proceeds will go to charity for veterans.”
Zuckerberg, known for his interest in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, had recently demonstrated his prowess in the sport. In May, he secured gold and silver medals in two featherweight white belt categories at a California martial arts tournament.
The origins of this proposed showdown trace back to June, when the two tech billionaires seemingly agreed to engage in a cage fight. The stakes for this battle took an unexpected turn when Meta introduced Threads, a direct competitor to Twitter, last month.
On July 10, shortly after Threads’ launch, Zuckerberg boasted that over 100 million users had signed up for the platform, positioning it as one of the most rapidly growing apps in history. However, subsequent weeks revealed a different story, as industry estimates indicated that Threads had struggled to retain users and experienced a notable decline in engagement, reaching new lows.
With the fate of the Zuckerberg-Musk showdown hanging in the balance and Threads facing its own challenges, the tech community watches with anticipation to see what these influential figures will take on next.
