On Wednesday night, Donald Trump did an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter. This interview took place while his contenders for the 2024 Republican nomination were debating elsewhere.
During the conversation, Carlson raised the topic of financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in 2019 while in a federal jail in New York City, awaiting trial for charges related to sex trafficking.
“Do you genuinely believe Epstein took his own life?” inquired Carlson.
“I can’t say for certain,” responded the former president. “I can mention that he was a prominent figure in Palm Beach.”
When asked about former Attorney General Bill Barr’s comments, Trump expressed ignorance.
“Barr stated that Epstein died by suicide and that an investigation would be conducted. However, the investigation never materialized. It remained undisclosed, shrouded in secrecy. Why this concealment?” Carlson pressed. “It’s evident that Barr possessed this information, but what could be the reason for his apparent cover-up of Epstein’s demise?”
At this point, Trump redirected the discussion toward election fraud in the 2020 elections, saying that Barr also failed to investigate those allegations.
The Inspector General, Michael Horowitz, pointed out deficiencies within the federal Bureau of Prisons regarding not assigning Epstein a cellmate after his previous one departed. Additionally, issues concerning surveillance cameras were identified as contributing factors to Epstein’s passing, according to a report by The Associated Press.
The same report cited Horowitz’s assertion that Epstein was left alone in his cell with excessive bed linens, which posed security risks and were ultimately employed in his act of suicide. Horowitz reiterated the conclusions drawn from previous inquiries, asserting that there was no indication of foul play, thus refuting the conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s high-profile death.
