Krypto the Superdog is a fictional character in the DC Comics universe. He first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 in March 1955. Krypto is a superhero dog, the pet of Superman in his formative years.
Krypto’s backstory begins on the planet Krypton, where he was originally known as “Krypto the Super-Pup.” He was the pet dog of Jor-El and Lara, Superman’s birth parents. When Jor-El learned that Krypton was going to explode, he launched a spacecraft containing his son Kal-El (Superman) towards Earth. However, he also launched another spacecraft containing Krypto in the hopes that the dog would be able to protect his son.
Krypto’s spacecraft was knocked off course and he arrived on Earth years after Superman had already grown up and become the protector of Metropolis. When Krypto arrived on Earth, he had all of the powers of Superman, including super strength, super speed, flight, and heat vision. However, because he was a dog, he lacked the intelligence and reasoning abilities of a human being.
Superman took Krypto in as his pet and trained him to use his powers for good. Krypto has since become a frequent companion of Superman and has also had his own adventures, sometimes with his fellow Super-Pets, including Streaky the Supercat and Ace the Bat-Hound.
Over the years, Krypto has appeared in numerous comic book series, animated television shows, and video games. He has become a beloved character in the DC Comics universe and is often featured in merchandise and other media related to the Superman franchise.
